Our Values

_0002_apricot.png

Hamantaschen are about doing what's right.

The annual festival of Purim commemorates the triumph of the Jewish people over genocide.  The hamantasch isn't just a dessert; it's a symbol for standing up for what's right.  And Purim serves as a reminder to add a bit more good into the world.

At NYB, we stand for tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (making the world a better place). After covering costs, 100% of our remaining proceeds go to charity.  Here are some causes we support.

EDUCATION

In the past decade, U.S. public schools were underfunded by hundreds of billions of tax dollars. 600 million 15- to 24-year-olds worldwide are currently not in school or receiving job training, and 5 million girls are expected not to re-enroll.

You can make a difference in a student's life by purchasing an Apple hamantasch, and we'll donate 50% to a classroom in need via DonorsChoose.org.

LGBT+ SAFETY

When times seem threatening for members of the LGBT+ community, here's an easy way you can help.

For every Lemon Lavender hamantasch you purchase, we'll donate 50% to The Trevor Project, a non-profit focused on suicide prevention efforts among queer youth.

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS

NYB believes people pregnant individuals have the right to make their own choice about their healthcare, their body, and their future.   In recent years, several states, including Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia, have pursued “heartbeat” bills that would ban abortion as soon as a physician is able to detect a fetal heartbeat.

Buy a Peach Cobbler hamantasch and 50% goes to ARC, directly providing financial assistance and reproductive resources to individuals and their families in the Southeast (#pissedoffpeaches)!

THE MIDDLE EAST

Wonder why the flavors of pistachio, cardamom, and rosewater work so well together? They've been part of Middle-Eastern cuisine for thousands of years (pistachios even get a shout-out in the Torah).

But things in the Middle East are not working together well these days. And as the conflict continues, the forgotten victims are the children from both communities, who have grown up in a perpetual war zone. NYB believes protecting these children and fostering dialogue among them is our best hope for a roadmap to peace.

For every Strawberry Pistachio hamantasch you purchase, we'll donate 50% to Children of Peace, part of the largest peace network across the Middle East. Children of Peace is non-partisan and seeks to provide opportunities to nurture safety, urgent healing, and mutual understanding.

COVID RELIEF

The exotic spices of masala chai are a healing staple for over a billion Indian people. But to date, only 10% of the Indian population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, leading to recurring waves and education and employment challenges in marginalized communities, where schools have been closed and daily wage earners haven’t been able to work.

For every Pumpkin Chai hamantasch you purchase, we'll donate 50% to CARE India, one of the largest and oldest humanitarian aid organizations in the world, to provide more health workers, hospital beds, oxygen supply, and more to India's poorest and highest-population cities hit by COVID-19.

GIRLS OF COLOR

Cheesecake appears once a year in Jewish tradition, for the holiday of Shavuot (when the Torah was given). While numerous theories conjecture why we eat dairy on Shavuot, a common one relates milk to nourishing the young, just as the Torah was to do for the Jewish people.

So for every Strawberry Cheesecake hamantasch you purchase, we will donate 50% to the Loveland Foundation, a non-profit committed to nourishing youth in our world today. Contributing provides opportunity, access, validation, and healing to Black girls and young women of color across America.

This charity was chosen by the winner of our 2023 NYB Flavor Contest.

ALZHEIMER'S

Wildberries carry a natural ally in the form of anthocyanidins, antioxidant compounds known for their ability to traverse from the bloodstream into the brain. Scientific studies have demonstrated that these compounds actually concentrate in vital brain centers responsible for memory and learning.

So, with every purchase of our Wildberry hamantaschen, 50% of the profits will directly contribute to the Alzheimer's Association. This organization stands at the forefront of propelling global research, promoting risk reduction and early detection, and enhancing the provision of quality care and support. As of 2023, an estimated 6.7 million Americans across all age groups were grappling with Alzheimer's disease, with a staggering 10.8% of individuals aged 65+ affected.

With every adrenaline-pumped Cappuccino Pecan hamantaschen you purchase, 50% of profits support to the Special Olympicsdedicated to providing year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Using sports as an outlet, the Special Olympics galvanizes the discovery of courage, joy, and a sense of belonging, creating a ripple effect of positive change within participants and their communities.

SAFE IMMIGRATION

We are proud of the Land of Liberty that welcomed our great-grandparents, persecuted refugees from Eastern Europe, with open arms.

So for every Mexican Hot Chocolate hamantasch you purchase, 50% will be donated to the IRC to support vulnerable families who have been separated at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The IRC provides legal aid, medical care, and temporary housing to asylum-seeking families released from immigration custody, as well as reuniting families separated by policies of the last administration.

MARINE WILDLIFE

15 trillion pieces of plastic trash are in the ocean, and growing every year.  Don't just be salty about it—here's how you can help.

For every Salted Caramel hamantasch you purchase, we'll donate 50% to Project AWARE. For 25 years, Project AWARE has been implementing change at the local level, through ocean clean-ups, and on an international scale, pushing for ocean-positive legislation.

UKRAINE

Since Ukraine declared a nationwide state of emergency at the end of February 2022, UNICEF has been working nonstop to deliver lifesaving programs for affected children and families living in the Donbas region, currently under siege by Russia.

In honor of Ukraines's national fruit, half the profits for each Cherry hamantasch fund UNICEF Ukraine. They provide health, hygiene and emergency supplies to communities near the line of contact, truck safe water to conflict-affected areas, support mobile child protection teams providing psychosocial care to children traumatized by chronic insecurity, responding to cases of violence and abuse against children and assisting children separated from family.

INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

Everyone loves creamy, tangy key lime pie. But what about kil’ayim pie? The Jewish observance of kil’ayim strives to protect the sanctity of the land, grains, and vegetables from genetic modification and abuse—a reminder that no one human truly owns the earth.

We share this tenet with our Native Americans siblings, and it remains challenged to this day in the wake of the atrocities committed by early settlers.

Buy a Key Lime Pie (Kil'ayim Pie) hamantasch and 50% goes to The Native American Heritage Association to help provide food security and dignity to these marginalized Native American communities today.

FEMALE EMPOWERMENT

NYB believes that every girl deserves the right to shape her own narrative, make choices about her well-being, and navigate her future with confidence. Through a unique combination of exercise, education, and mentoring, Girls on the Run inspires girls to embrace their individuality and develop essential life skills. Participants not only learn about health and wellness but also cultivate meaningful relationships, all while working towards the exciting goal of completing a 5K.

With every purchase of our S'mores hamantaschen, 50% helps support Girls on the Run in its mission to create a positive and uplifting environment for girls, instilling values of self-worth, teamwork, and resilience.

NATIONAL HUNGER

Some of us grew up with the mantra, "Hungry? Eat a banana." But 1 in 8 households (12.8%) in the United States experience food insecurity, or lack of access to an affordable, nutritious diet. And 1 in 7 individuals face hunger—a 30% more than last year.

So for every Bananas Foster hamantasch sold, we will foster a more equitable country by donating 50% of profits to Feeding America, the largest charity working to end hunger in the United States. Every dollar can help provide at least 10 meals to families facing hunger through the Feeding America network of food banks.
